The Tennessee Municipal League is urging town and city officials with traffic-camera enforcement programs to contact Tennessee House Transportation Committee members “to voice your support for local governments to continue to utilize these cameras.”
In the e-mail, the TML says “your municipality is one of twenty-two currently utilizing either red light or speed enforcement cameras in the state of Tennessee. Should the Tennessee General Assembly enact legislation restricting or prohibiting the use of these cameras, it is likely your municipality will be subject to new restrictions or prohibitions once the current contractual obligations are fulfilled.”
House Transportation Committee members are expected to vote this coming Monday for new restrictions on the growing practice by local governments to use camera enforcement programs. The recommendations would then be considered when the General Assembly meets in regular session later this month.
