Milton Jackson, an Alton Park resident, wants to reinvigorate an environmental grass-roots organization that once was instrumental in getting a Superfund designation for the cleanup of Chattanooga Creek.
Jackson, the organization’s president, will host a meeting today at 6 p.m. at the South Chattanooga Recreation Center.
He wants the group to become active again because of continuing community concerns over what he calls the lack of complete cleanup plans for the idled Velsicol plant site in South Chattanooga, as well as what is believed to be creosote contamination alongside Chattanooga Creek at the old Southern Wood Piedmont site.
Jackson said he also questions whether the Alton Park and South Chattanooga community is being properly protected from decaying asbestos in the old Bell School site reclamation.
