Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Fort Oglethorpe will host a panel discussion and battlefield tour about the commander of the U.S. Army of the Cumberland, Maj. Gen. William Starke Rosecrans, on Saturday, June 4.
Presenting their views will be three prominent Rosecrans scholars: David G. Moore, Frank P. Varney and David Powell, all of whom have written books about his leadership.
The one-hour panel begins at 11 a.m. The 45-minute car caravan tour will follow at 1 p.m. Both programs start inside the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center, 3370 LaFayette Road. The panelists will hold book signings from 10 to 11 a.m. and throughout the afternoon.
Rosecrans could be considered a brilliant general. He graduated fifth in his West Point class and until the Battle of Chickamauga had never lost a battle he commanded. However, his one defeat in Northwest Georgia would see his ruin and exile to what was essentially a backwater of the war, the panelists contend.
Today, Rosecrans’ legacy is seeing a resurgence due in large part to the panelists’ recent writings:
* David G. Moore is the author of “William S. Rosecrans and the Union Victory.”
* Frank P. Varney is the author of “General Grant and the Rewriting of History.”
* David Powell is the author of “The Maps of Chickamauga,” “Failure in the Saddle,” “The Chickamauga Campaign: A Mad Irregular Battle” and “The Chickamauga Campaign: Glory or the Grave.”
