Hixson giving attention to Down syndrome help

Hixson High has labled tonight’s home game against Red Bank as Touchdown Syndrome Night.

“We’re going to have representatives at the game from the Chattanooga Down Syndrome Society, and they’ll be taking up donations,” Hixson coach Houston White said.

Donation tables will be set up at each ticket booth along with a signup table for the society’s annual Buddy Walk, one of its fundraisers.

Hallie Hearn, daughter of Hixson offensive coordinator Daniel Hearn, has Down syndrome. She will be an honorary Hixson captain.

Warriors Honor Boring

When they take the field tonight, Bledsoe County players will have a number 7 and the letters K and B on their helmets as a way of honoring teammate Kainen Boring.

Boring dropped in practice last week and was later disagnosed with arteriovenous malformation, an abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the brain that usually forms before birth.

“He’s still fighting,” Bledsoe coach Jason Reel said of Boring, who is at Erlanger hospital.

The Pikeville school also may paint some arrowheads on each side of the field at the 40-yard lines with Boring’s number 7 incorporated. Reel said the team might place Boring’s initials at midfield as well.

Meigs’ Savage Back

Meigs County running back Travis Savage will be back tonight for the game against McMinn Central after being held out last week.

“He had his ankle folded under him during the game the week before, so I held him out last week because he was still a little sore. I didn’t want him to injure it more,” Meigs coach Ricky Holliday said. “The kid has a [college football] future, and I didn’t want him to tear his ankle up. He was a little mad at me, I think.”

Savage, a senior, has had two 100-yard rushing games. He ran for 232 yards in the season opener against Upperman.

Thomas Picks Three

Boyd-Buchanan cornerback Kyle Thomas made three interceptions last Friday in the Buccaneers’ win over Howard, and the last one iced the victory. It came in the final 90 seconds of a 20-12 decision.

“He played really well,” Bucs coach Grant Reynoldds said of the senior. “He also had five tackles. He has been very consistent and started 14 games for us last year. He’s coachable and he got stronger and faster over the summer. With him and Andrew Peace in the secondary, it gives us a lot of leadership.”

Tigers’ Walters Out

Junior Brandon Walters, a college prospect as a two-way starter, is likely to miss Howard’s home game tonight against Central. The 6-foot-7, 275-pounder fractured his hand last week against Boyd-Buchanan, according to Hustlin’ Tigers coach Michael Calloway.
