Woman dies in Red Bank creek

A Chattanooga woman died last week after falling into a creek in Red Bank, officials said.

Red Bank Police Chief Larry Sneed said an investigation appears to indicate that Marleita Milkovich, 54, fell into a concrete-covered creek behind the Red Bank Lions Club on Dayton Boulevard.

He said the creek is about six feet deep and water was only up a couple of inches.

“She had possibly been there since Thursday,” Chief Sneed said.

Ms. Milkovich was found Saturday about 7:30 a.m. by a resident who lives nearby, he said.

No foul play is suspected in the death, Chief Sneed said.

Man, 25, killed in car wreck

A 25-year-old man was killed Sunday morning when his car veered off Highway 58 and hit a tree, police said.

Christopher Ryan Howell, of Birchwood, was an employee of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and was working in the Hamilton County Jail, said Janice Atkinson, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

About 7 a.m., the sheriff’s office was notified of a crash at 12701 Highway 58. When deputies arrived, they found a 2007 Toyota Corolla off the road, and Mr. Howell was dead inside, Ms. Atkinson said. He was the only one in the car and was not wearing a seat belt, she said.

It’s not known why Mr. Howell’s car left the road, she said, but evidence of alcohol was found in the car.

Mr. Howell’s condition at the time of the crash will not be known until the Hamilton County medical examiner issues a report, she said.

Anyone who has knowledge of Mr. Howell’s whereabouts before the crash is asked to call the Traffic Division at 423-209-8894.
