“Spring Place: A Legacy in Education” is the theme of the 16th annual Spring Place Community Festival, set for Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church near Chatsworth, Ga.
A new and used book sale, food concessions, bake sale, indoor and outdoor flea market, raffle and other activities will begin at 8 a.m. Organizers say the highlight of the day is always the auction, which this year includes artist prints, paintings, book sets, antiques, rugs and gift cards donated by area businesses. It starts at 10 a.m.
The day also will feature a display of textbooks, photos and other memorabilia from the many small, rural schools that eventually became part of Spring Place. Alumni of the schools are invited to meet at the festival to reminisce.
The festival is co-sponsored by the Spring Place Ruritan Club. Proceeds go to the Old Spring Place Methodist Church Preservation Fund administered by the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society. According to records, the church built in 1875 is the oldest structure designed for public use still standing in Murray County.
The site is off Georgia Highway 225 South at Elm Street near the Vann House.
