Carole Harris cuts, pieces, quilts and appliques fabric to construct vibrantly colored art quilts. The theme of her creations revolves around the rhythm, energy and movement of African and African-American music.
An exhibit of her work is on display at River Gallery through May 31.
A resident of Michigan, Ms. Harris combines a variety of traditional quilt patterns, African motifs and her own imagery and expression.
“Dense layering of patterns, repetition and overlapping materials are all techniques evocative of both African and African-American music,” she said in her artist’s statement.
Ms. Harris is particularly fond of blues and jazz and tries to infuse her quilts with an improvisational energy similar to that of a jazz musician who riffs on a theme until it is unrecognizable.
