Report: Antone Davis resigned because of ‘bullying and mental abuse’ from Butch Jones

A Friday report from Knoxville radio host Jimmy Hyams of WNML indicated that Tennessee’s Vol for Life coordinator Antone Davis resigned his position this week because of “constant intimidation, bullying and mental abuse” from Tennessee coach Butch Jones.

Davis made those comments in an Oct. 31 resignation letter to athletic director John Currie, according to Hyams.

The Times Free Press submitted a Freedom of Information Act request on Thursday for Davis’ resignation letter. Under law, the university has seven days to respond to the request.

The Times Free Press reported Wednesday that Davis was resigning after Tennessee announced Davis was leaving the school to “pursue personal business opportunities.”

Davis, a former Tennessee and NFL offensive lineman, had coordinated the VFL program since August of 2012.

The VFL program conducts outreach and offers support to former players. The term “VFL” was popularized under former coach Derek Dooley, who was at Tennessee from 2010 to 2012.

“We appreciate Antone’s work for the University of Tennessee and our football program,” Currie said in the the Wednesday announcement. “He had an outstanding career here as a student-athlete and then returned more than 20 years later to impact the lives of young men who were following in his footsteps. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
