Chattanooga Mocs try to regroup quickly

John Shulman received a text from a friend following his University of Tennessee at Chattanooga basketball team’s 94-68 loss Thursday night to UNC Greensboro.

It read, “The sun will come up tomorrow.”

But on a dreary, gray day in Chattanooga, Shulman hadn’t seen the sun by the time he prepared for the daily team meeting.

“It’s probably that gloomy, and the gloomiest part of the season by a landslide,” Shulman said Friday. “There was a lot on the line last night. We were one game out of the [Southern Conference tournament’s final] bye with a win in a year everything had gone wrong and we were still hanging in there.”

The Mocs (11-17, 6-9) may not have hit rock bottom for the season, but they certainly hit an emotional low with three regular-season games remaining. Those begin tonight at 7:30 in McKenzie Arena against North Division-leading Elon (19-8, 12-3), following the league-leading UTC women’s 5 p.m. game.
