Chattanooga firefighters rescued a man who became trapped in a cave on Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

The man reportedly twisted his ankle while visiting Raccoon Mountain Caverns and needed help getting out.

Battalion Chief Chris Willmore said it took three hours to rescue the man, who was more than a half mile down in the cavern, according to the release.

The man was carried in a Stokes rescue basket until there was room for him to walk with some assistance. The man declined to be transported to a hospital once he was out of the cave, but he told firefighters he may go in a personal vehicle to be checked out.
