Former UTC running star Lanni Marchant, a Chattanooga resident and attorney, ran the first of her two races for Canada’s Olympic team Friday morning in Rio de Janeiro.

She finished 25th out of 37 runners with a time of 32 minutes, 4.21 seconds in the women’s 10,000-meter race two days before she runs the women’s marathon.

Her personal record in the 10k is 31:46. Marchant holds the Canadian women’s marathon record.

The 10k was run at a blistering pace, and Ethiopa’s Almaz Ayana broke a 23-year-old world record by 14-plus seconds in winning in 29:17.45, while Molly Huddle broke the United States record by nine seconds with her sixth-place 30:13.17.

Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot took the silver medal, and 2008 and 2012 gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba from Ethiopia was third.
