Adhering to the theme “Change Is Good,” In-Town Gallery has prepped for its spring all-member show with a renewing of the space.
The gallery closed for a couple of days to patch and paint, with windows covered to prepare for the storefront’s fresh face. Paintings, jewelry and three-dimensional works were removed and new works brought in. The results may be seen Friday, May 6, with a reception to introduce the new works and new members.
It’s one of two all-member shows that start with a clean slate during the year, and both opening receptions are “particularly festive,” says gallery spokeswoman Jennie Kirkpatrick. “Most artists attend the event and are ready to greet guests,” she says.
In-Town is welcoming two new members with this reveal.
* Sandra Paynter Washburn is a painter and educator whose work is notable for its innovative use of acrylic paint and mixed media.
“Most of my work is abstract, inspired by patterns found in nature and ancient cultures, with special attention paid to creating strong compositions,” she says.
* Linda Kerlin and family moved to Jasper, Tenn., from Wilmington, N.C., purchasing rural farmland and a century-old home.
“My recent works are based on my environment, specifically the land, rivers and vegetation,” she says, adding that she strives for a balance between abstraction and realism. “My work is also inspired by my love of antiques and landscaping. My work expresses the memories of nature and the many places I have lived.”
Visitors also can expect to see paintings, photography, turned wood bowls, lamps, glass pieces, woven shawls, metal sculpture and pottery from the gallery’s full roster of artists on display.
“Change Is Good” continues through Tuesday, May 31. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday (until 8 p.m. on first Fridays), 1-5 p.m. Sundays.
