Georgia held its final Saturday practice of the preseason, working out for two hours on campus.
The Bulldogs practiced Friday in the Georgia Dome, which was their first appearance there since a 31-24 win over Virginia Tech in the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl. Georgia not only got used to the setting for this week’s opener against Boise State but also donned the Nike combat uniforms they will showcase against the Broncos.
“We let them put on the uniforms and get that out of their systems a little bit,” coach Mark Richt said. “I figured the first time they put them on that they would be primping a little bit, so I was trying to get those things of the way. Now we don’t have to worry about them being in awe of the Dome and taking pictures in the mirror of their new uniforms.”
Richt said junior cornerback and punt returner Branden Smith missed Saturday’s practice with a foot injury but that it’s not believed to be serious. Smith, who now is backed by freshman Damian Swann at one of the corner spots, is being listed day-to-day and is probable for the opener.
Sanders Commings, who has practiced at corner and safety this month, now is considered the top safety, according to Richt, and will start alongside Shawn Williams.
Starting receiver Marlon Brown, backup noseguard Jonathan Jenkins and reserve tailback Ken Malcome did not practice Saturday, but all three are expected to return this week.
