There’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of hearty chicken noodle soup-especially in the winter months. Warm up with this simple, classic recipe and enjoy its medicinal properties (well, at least according to Grandma) just in time for cold and flu season.

What you need

1 tablespoon butter

2 minced garlic cloves

3/4 cup chopped onion

3/4 cup chopped celery

4 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth

1 (14.5 ounce) can vegetable broth

1/2 pound chopped cooked chicken breast

1 1/2 cups egg noodles

1 cup sliced carrots

1/2 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon garlic pepper

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

What you do

In melted butter, sauté garlic cloves, onion, celery and carrots.

Add chicken, broth, basil, oregano, salt, garlic pepper and thyme. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook 3 cups egg noodles according to package directions in a separate pot.

Add drained noodles to chicken and veggies, simmer an additional 10 minutes.

Soup Swap

Hosting a Soup Swap is the perfect way to fill your fridge with good, easy meals for your family-plus, it’s an excellent way to find new recipes and meet new friends. All you have to do is ask guests to create a batch of their favorite soup(s) and package them into quart containers or freezer bags (if you have six guests, each guest should make six quarts of soup). Create a designated time and place for your event, and have each guest pick a number from a bowl. Whoever gets number one picks a soup, then number two and so on until everyone has one container of soup. Then start over in that order again until everyone has collected the same number of packages they came in with. The Eighth National Soup Swap is January 25, so start planning!
