Wrecktangles club offers dance class

Chattanooga’s oldest active square-dance club, the Wrecktangles, will begin a series of basic square-dance classes Thursday.

Referring to the social event as “friendship set to music,” members say the excuse of “I can’t dance” shouldn’t be a deterrent.

“It might be more definitive if we called it ‘square walking,’ ” said a news release from the club.

Square dancing is about walking in different patterns directed by the square dance caller, the news release explained. Often, that attempt ends with people “goofing up, laughing and having a great time.”

The key, they said, is “having a great time.”

“Square dancing is one activity where you never have to say ‘I’m sorry’ if you get a call wrong,” said the release. “All of the dancers do it at some point, and we all laugh about it.”

The caller/instructor will be Alan Hall, who has 10 years’ experience.

The classes, to be held from 7 to 8 p.m. each Thursday, will lead up to the club’s 52nd anniversary dance on Aug. 26. The venue is Allemande Hall, 7400 Standifer Gap Road.

Admission fee will be $4, but the first night is free to new class members. The club’s weekly dance follows the class, and all class members may stay and watch.
