Law officers in Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia will take part in a five-state speeding crackdown called “Operation Southern Shield,” according to a news release.
Alabama, Florida and South Carolina also are joining the weeklong initiative that starts Monday, July 17.
The Calhoun, Ga., police department said in a release its officers will be stepping up patrols to enforce posted speed limits on all highways, roads and streets.
“We’re not trying to write tickets, we’re trying to get to get you to slow down. But guess what, if you don’t slow down we will write you a ticket,” Harris Blackwood, director of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, said in the release.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, speeding is the cause of 30 percent of the traffic deaths in the United States each year.
