Now that it’s the new year, perhaps Sue Ann Lockhart can take a breath.
As owner of Dunlap’s Cookie Jar Café, she and her crew cook endlessly from November through December preparing holiday orders.
“We filled around 500 orders from Thanksgiving to Christmas,” said Sue Ann.
Orders ranged from Cookie Jar’s famous tortes – chocolate, cherry and, my personal favorite, banana – to its icing-stacked cupcake options – lemon, coconut and pumpkin spice, to name a few. There were cookies, Rice Krispies Treats and butterscotch pies.
“That’s a lot of cake and pie!” said Sue Ann. And the Scenic City knows it too.
Beginning in January, Sue Ann said she sees many customers opt out of sweets in favor of ordering lighter options such as the grilled tilapia or one of the café’s salads, available with added protein such as grilled chicken, grilled ham or popcorn shrimp.
“Everyone is trying to make up for those holiday sweets,” she laughed.
Sue Ann welcomes the respite. It gives her and her crew time to come up with sweet new recipes. In 2016, she plans to expand Cookie Jar’s bakery. New dreamy confections will be added to the already decadent lineup and a “dessert of the month” will be featured.
“We haven’t made the final decision yet, but this month will probably be something lemony,” said Sue Ann. Perhaps a lemon torte? Or a lemon sprinkle cupcake? Maybe a sugary lemon cheesecake? Who knows?

In the meantime, enjoy your light salad or seafood dish. You’ll want to save room for Cookie Jar’s pending treats.
