Fort Oglethorpe to turn Barnhardt Circle building into a gymnasium

Fort Oglethorpe is entering an intergovernmental agreement between the city and county to turn a local building into a gymnasium.

“The 2009 SPLOST for Catoosa County earmarked certain funds for recreation in local jurisdictions,” said Fort Oglethorpe City Manager Ron Goulart. “Fort Oglethorpe as part of SPLOST had certain funds delegated to it. Approximately $387,000 had been collected for recreation to be spent. The city elected to spend that money on renovating a building located in close proximity to the ball fields. I hope renovations begin within the next few weeks.”

Goulart said the city has asked the county to allow renovations to begin.

“We will submit receipts for renovations to the county or reimbursement from SPLOST proceeds,” he said. “We want to delegate overseeing the renovations to our city Recreation Commission. We hope to utilize [the new gym] perhaps before fall.”

The building in question is located between Second and Third streets, just off of Barnhardt Circle – the gray building beside Battlefield Ministries Community Church.
