Amazing case of Rod Blagojevich

What isn’t incredible about former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich?

But we won’t go into all that now. The current news is that the former governor has been tried in federal court on 24 counts – being convicted on only one.

The judge declared a mistrial on the 23 counts on which jurors couldn’t agree.

The U.S. attorney said the government intends to retry the former governor as soon as possible on the still-disputed questions.

The count on which the former governor was convicted charged that he lied to federal agents. Blagojevich said he intends to appeal.

The charges on which the jury could not agree included accusations that the then-governor had tried to trade or “sell” President Barack Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat and that the governor had tried to use his office for personal gain.

Blagojevich responded, “This jury shows you that the government threw everything but the kitchen sink at me. They could not prove I did anything wrong – except one nebulous charge from five years ago.”

If that one conviction stands, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Stay tuned.
