Bridge event supports end to offshore drilling

About 85 people gathered today at noon on the Walnut Street Bridge to publicly oppose offshore drilling for oil.

Linking hands, the group spread across the bridge and stood for 15 minutes, proclaiming their hopes for an end to deepwater oil drilling and a transition to clean energy.

Though several attendees held posters expressing frustration with the recent oil spill off the Gulf Coast, organizers said the event was not a protest, but rather a “peaceful gathering” that is part of an international movement known as Hands Across the Sand.
