Chris Jones, Adarius Bowman and Phillip Lolley gave the Chattanooga area at least three reasons to take an interest in the Edmonton Eskimos and the Canadian Football League. On Sunday, they gave their followers a reason to celebrate.

Edmonton’s Jordan Lynch scored on a 1-yard run – his only carry of the game – with 1:37 left as the Eskimos rallied to beat the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the Grey Cup, the CFL’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. It’s the 14th championship for the Eskimos (16-4), but their first since 2005 and first under Jones, the former South Pittsburg High School and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player who is in his second season as their head coach.

Last season he led the team within a win of the title – a year after they went 4-14 – and on Sunday the winning five-play, 78-drive was aided by his successful challenge of an incompletion that was changed to pass interference against Ottawa’s Brandon Sermons. That gave the Eskimos the ball at the 10-yard line of the Redblacks (13-7). Bowman, who played at Notre Dame High School, finished with four catches for 73 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown. Lolley is a former North Jackson High School coach who coaches linebackers for Edmonton.

Women’s Basketball

‘ Sophomore guard Sydney Sims scored 19 points to lead four Chattanooga State players in double figures as the Lady Tigers won 73-61 at home against Snead State on Sunday. Kaela Patrick added 15 points, Teondra Crawford had 14 points and nine assists, and Melva Sheppard finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds for Chattanooga State (7-2), which led 51-45 at halftime. Crawford and Patrick each made a trio of 3-pointers, while Sims converted two attempts beyond the arc. Jasmine Richardson registered a game-high 22 points and Lekeisha Shy chipped in 10 for Snead State (7-2).
