In this ArtWise program, scholar Erin Corrales-Diaz, curator of The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg, S.C., will explore the artist’s connection to the Grand Canyon as it relates to his practice of spiritual vision and aesthetic philosophy. Known for his mystical and ethereal landscape paintings, Daingerfield became captivated by the Grand Canyon while on a sketching expedition sponsored by the Santa Fe Railway in late 1910. The geological wonder of the American Southwest became a source of inspiration, generating an unusual body of work between 1911 and 1915.
* Saturday, Jan. 23: “Resisting Materialism: The Work of Elliott Daingerfield,” 1:30 p.m. Free with regular admission.
