Two of Tennessee’s top high school softball programs will meet in a possible state-tournament preview Sunday when Murfreesboro Riverdale visits Soddy-Daisy at 2 p.m.
The perennial Class AAA state powers have combined to win nearly 70 games this season and are led by two of the highest-rated pitchers in Tennessee: Soddy-Daisy’s Kelsey Nunley and Riverdale’s Rachel Albritton, a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga signee.
“We usually see them in tournaments or the sectional round or maybe the state tournament,” Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk said. “But we were talking before this season and they said they wanted to come to our place and play a regular-season game.
“We have a lot of respect for each other and we’re both good teams again this year. This is just for bragging rights, but I think it will be a good measuring stick for both teams to see where we stand.”
Kirk, who owns nine state titles (seven with Soddy-Daisy and two at Hixson), has the Lady Trojans off to a 32-3 start despite having only one senior in the lineup.
