Man killed in Sunday crash on Cleveland’s North Lee Highway

An 81-year-old man was killed and his 75-year-old wife airlifted to a hospital after a two-car collision Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, Tennessee, according to a police news release.

The crash occurred just before 1 p.m. in front of a Captain D’s restaurant, Cleveland Police Department public information officer Evie West said.

West said a preliminary investigation indicated a white Toyota Camry driven by Jerry Freeman, 81, was turning left on North Lee Highway while leaving the restaurant parking lot when it was struck by a red Jeep Wrangler pulling a small smoker trailer and heading north.

Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene by Bradley County emergency medical services personnel. His wife and passenger,Shirley Freeman, 75, was flown to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga with “substantial” injuries, the release states.

John Norton, 59, identified as the driver of the Jeep, was taken to Tennova Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and subsequently released.

West said in the release the crash did not appear to be speed or alcohol related.
