Cleaveland: A New Year’s letter to an infant American

Dear P.J.: You were six months old before I formally met you. Our eyes locked. You immediately returned my smile with an open-mouthed grin that displayed your two lower teeth. Already you have more hair (red) than remains on my head.

As the child of citizens, your own citizenship will never be in dispute. You will have unchallenged access to all the rights and privileges of being an American. You will be able to vote for the first time in 2034. In the meantime, it is the responsibility of citizens to safeguard your legacy.

You were born into a secure home to parents who love you, protect you and will see to your every need.

I don’t recall that any candidate, whether for president or Congress, addressed the needs of infants and children who may be less fortunate than you. Perhaps the politicians forgot. Perhaps they are only interested in people who can vote. They talk about “growing the economy” but overlook how that might affect children. Here are some of the issues that politicians at all levels of government should address, assuming that they care about children.
