Side Orders: Fish & Chips fundraiser a good bet

On Friday, May 14, you can gamble in Chattanooga. No need to hit the tables in Cherokee or Tunica. Just make your way to The Mill, 1601 Gulf St., off Main Street, from 7 to 11 p.m., and you can try your luck at winning great prizes through complimentary casino games. It’s a minimal-risk evening with maximum fun.

“Fish & Chips: Chatta Asian Style” is a fundraiser for the Children’s Advocacy Center. It will feature food from P.F. Chang’s, music from the Ben Friberg Trio and a silent auction, in addition to games of Texas Hold ‘Em, blackjack, craps and a spin around the roulette wheel. There’ll be slot machines, too.

Tickets are $85 per person. Call 266-6918 or log onto www.www.cachc.org.

The recent Chocolate Lovers Fling was a haven for chocoholics with dozens of chocolate treats in which to indulge. But there were a few chocolate dreams that stood out from others, according to judges.

Here are the winners:

* Judge’s Choice: 212 Market’s Bittersweet Chocolate Truffle, 212 Market.

* Most Creative Presentation: The Hot Chocolatier’s chocolate sculpture.

* People’s Choice: Marquis Cakes Catering’s Chocolate Cheesecake Temptation.

One simple word wraps up this event: Yum.

Knowing where your food comes from has become more popular with the move toward locally derived foods. However, until the growing season is in full swing, we’ll still be getting produce from faraway places. Now, Fresh Express has introduced a new feature to its website — the Leaf Locator. It tracks where the lettuce and spinach in each bag were grown and how they’re cared for from field to store.

All you have to do is get some numbers off the back of your bag of greens and key them in at www.FreshExpress.com/salad. I tried it recently and found that my lettuce was grown in New Mexico a week or so before I brought it home. Pretty fresh. But don’t forget, even though it looks very clean, it doesn’t hurt to give it a go in your salad spinner.
