Breeland Speaks eager to make the most of difficult situation at Ole Miss

OLE MISS

› Last season: 5-7 (2-6 SEC)› Opener: Sept. 2 vs. South Alabama (7:30 p.m. on ESPNU)› Fun fact: Ole Miss has self-imposed a bowl ban for this season. The Rebels are 24-13 in bowls, the best percentage (.649) of any program in the SEC.› Coming Monday: Mississippi State

When he’s not terrorizing Southeastern Conference quarterbacks and running backs, Ole Miss defensive tackle Breeland Speaks is taking criminal justice courses with an emphasis in corrections.

“I want to be a prison program designer who helps guys get back into the reality of being in the real world and not a closed environment,” Speaks said at SEC media days. “I also want to make sure that those guys in prison are doing things to better themselves every single day. I’ve always wanted to help people, and there obviously are a lot of guys who have gotten into trouble and didn’t hear enough voices.

“I feel like I can help guys out.”

In a sense, this season could serve as a trial run for the 6-foot-3, 285-pound junior from Jackson, Miss.
