Bledsoe County tweaks selection process

The Bledsoe County director of schools job is open for applicants this month as school board members finish work on a protocol for selecting a replacement for outgoing Director Phil Kiper.

Kiper will leave his post at the end of the 2011-12 school year, and officials want to have someone in place before then to work with Kiper until his contract ends.

The board approved a resolution in October that included a measure to appoint a selection committee made up of nonelected local residents, but last week voted down the formation of that panel for a return to a board-led review process, according to officials.

Longtime board member Sue Everett, who made the motion to dissolve the committee, said the board’s decision to do away with the panel put the responsibility for hiring Kiper’s replacement back with those who do the hiring. The board approved the motion 6-1 with Vice Chairman Bobby Angel casting a dissenting vote.
