Budget deficits and Billy Carter

You may remember Billy Carter, the colorful but scandal-plagued brother of former President Jimmy Carter.

The “First Brother” accepted a large loan from the radical Libyan government, for which he also served as a registered agent for a time. He was also known for his failed promotion of “Billy Beer” and other unsuccessful ventures.

President Carter was understandably embarrassed by some of the activities of his brother, who died in 1988.

But whatever your opinion — if you have one — of Billy Carter, does it seem reasonable to you that Congress is pushing legislation to have the National Park Service take over Billy Carter’s one-time gas station in Plains, Ga., and make it a National Historic Site?

It would cost millions of dollars, at a time when the Park Service is already billions of dollars short in its attempts to maintain the properties it already manages.

Does this project make you question whether Congress really is interested in getting deficit spending under control, instead of adding to the $12.1 trillion national debt?
