Spring shifting gears again

Spring is often thought of as a time of gradually warming temperatures, but according to local meteorologists, it’s actually the most changeable weather period of the year.

“April is climatically the most active severe weather month,” said Brian Boyd, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn. “Most of that has been driven by cold fronts still coming through the area. You can expect changeable weather in the springtime.”

And the Chattanooga area has seen just that. After more than six hours and nearly an inch of rain Thursday, area forecasters predict sunny skies for the next week, with temperatures once again creeping into the 70s.

Jessica Fieux, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Ga., said that, despite increasing temperatures, the time for freezing weather hasn’t passed.

“There’s still a chance we could see a couple more cold fronts,” she said.

Chattanooga’s record low for Thursday – hit just three years ago – was 28 degrees, signaling that anything is still possible, Mr. Boyd said.

“The record high was 88 – that’s quite a range,” he said. “You can go from almost 90 to below freezing in early April.”

For now though, temperatures will continue to climb and the sun will shine – at least for the next few days.

“We should have a pretty nice weekend,” Ms. Fieux said.
