The Sewanee: University of the South’s “How, Then, Shall We Live?” lecture series will present “What Every College Graduate Needs to Know,” a talk by professor, writer, critic and historian Louis Menand.

The event takes place at 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in Convocation Hall on the Sewanee campus. Admission is free, and the lecture is open to the public.

In “The Marketplace of Ideas,” Menand assesses what is important in a traditional university – and what is not – and questions whether universities are providing a less-useful education than they might.

Menand is the Robert M. and Anne T. Bass Professor of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University and staff writer at The New Yorker. He is also the author of “The Metaphysical Club,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for history and the Francis Parkman Prize in 2002.
