NASHVILLE — Despite objections by Democrats, the state House today approved a budget implementation bill that keeps school boards in Hamilton and six nearby counties from using state dollars in their lawsuit over the state’s education funding formula.
House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick, R-Chattanooga, defended the provision, saying state dollars shouldn’t be used in an attempt to persuade courts “to take over the power of appropriations” from the state “for a massive tax increase.”
“That’s why there are only 26 of you,” McCormick pointedly told minority Democrats.
The bill is expected to come before the Senate later today.
