Fatal crash may be hit, run

Authorities are looking into a fatal crash on Interstate 59 that appears to be a hit and run.

Georgia State troopers were notified Wednesday night that a Ford Ranger was crashed on I-59 at the 14-mile marker northbound, and the driver was dead, said Georgia State Patrol Sgt. James McConathy.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said. “It was a one-vehicle crash, but evidence shows another vehicle — a tractor trailer — might (be involved).”

While authorities are not sure of the exact time of the accident, troopers arrived on the scene about 6:40 p.m., Sgt. McConathy said.

The body was taken to the Dade County Coroner’s Office and identified on Thursday as Tommy Sherlock, of North Augusta, S.C., said Coroner John Gray.

The damage to the truck indicates that a tractor-trailer either pulled out in front of the vehicle or that Mr. Sherlock hit the rear of the truck, Sgt. McConathy said.

TO HELP* If you have any information on this accident call the Georgia State troopers office in LaFayette at 706-638-5501.

After the vehicles collided, the truck driver didn’t stay around to report the incident, he said, and the emergency call was placed by someone who spotted the crashed Ford Ranger.

So far, authorities have not located the other vehicle but the investigation will continue, he said.
