Two people are facing charges of child abuse after a child was admitted to a local hospital with a broken arm, fractured ribs, lacerated kidney and fractured skull with bleeding on the brain.
Derrick Douglas, 28, and Aushanti Flowers, 23, were arrested on two counts of aggravated child abuse on Wednesday, according to court documents.
Doctors who tended to the the child’s “severe injuries” noticed they were in different stages of healing, indicating the times of injuries were different. They also indicated these injuries were not by accidental trauma.
A second victim was found at a home shortly afterward and was found to have huge welts that were reported to be several days old. Both children were admitted to TC Thompson’s Hospital.
One of the victims had multiple seizures and a day after Douglas and Flowers were charged, the child was still going in and out of consciousness. Doctors noted concern that the child may have permanent damage from bleeding on the brain.
Douglas and Flowers admitted to spanking the children to the point of leaving marks. Douglas also said Flowers grabbed the child’s arm during some spankings in a way that might have caused the break.
