Edward Boling, president emeritus of the University of Tennessee, died.
Boling, who turned 93 on Feb. 19, was president of the university from 1970 to 1988 and was the longest serving president of UT. In his 18 years as the leader, the university saw an expansion of the Knoxville campus as well as other major developments for the university to become a statewide system.
According to a 2013 News Sentinel story, Boling graduated from Knoxville High School, worked for Wilby-Kinsey Theaters as an usher and later went to work at Alcoa before enrolling at UT. He then left campus to serve in World War II and returned after the war to graduate in 1948.
