State group petitions over card fees

A group of six Tennessee small-business leaders traveled to Washington, D.C., to petition elected representatives to reduce credit card interchange fees.

Interchange, or swiping fees, are charged to businesses for each credit card transaction, and in the United States it is usually about 2 percent of the total transaction, according to Sarah Tanksley, account representative on behalf of Consumers for Competitive Choice.

“We’re hoping that this bill will come up in the Senate Banking Committee after the President’s Day recess,” Ms. Tanksley said. “It is not only a small-business issue; it impacts everyone across the board.”

The group included David Curd, owner of Best Way Printing and president of the East Ridge Merchants Association; Marc Gravitt, owner of Gravitt Auction: Bill Breneman, owner of SRM Lodging; Michael Embree, owner of Stitchin’ Post; Joshua Hammond, owner of Buster’s Liquors and Wines and president of the Tennessee Wine and Spirits Retailers Association; and Martin Lang, owner of the Transmission Store and vice president of the Dickerson Road Merchants Association.
