Las Cafeteras is Spanish for “the coffee makers,” and their rise in the music industry is testament they’ve found the right blend of Afro-Mexican, hip-hop, folk, American Indian and traditional son jarocho (folk music of Veracruz).

Or, as one of their Twitter followers described their sound: hipster Mexicano meets early ’90s No Doubt with a powerful voice and message.

Las Cafeteras will headline Nightfall on Friday, July 27, in Miller Plaza. Kindora will open the free concert at 7 p.m. followed by the headliners at 8.

The Chicano band from East Los Angeles, California, started out as students of the Eastside Café, a community spot in Los Angeles, where they took son jarocho classes. Influenced by the music from Veracruz, and eager to teach others about it, they formed their band in 2005.
