See Earth’s Coolest Cars for Free

Automobiles like this '31 Morgan three-wheeler were too expensive for ordinary Americans in the days before Detroit learned how to mass produce cars. Custom-built cars like the Morgan and their handcrafted predecessors were bought by captains of industry — Astors, DuPonts, Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Rockerfellers. The 1931 Morgan was, like all cars made by the British company, built by hand. Mrs. E. Paul DuPont bought this Morgan for her husband at the London event where the car was unveiled. Originally cherry red, the DuPonts repainted it in

The 1918 global flu epidemic killed 100 million — or 5 percent of the people living on the planet. This white hearse is a reminder that thousands who died were children. Luminous white paint gives the hearse an ivory sheen. A large round window allows onlookers to see the child's face. The window is placed low so children can peer in, too.

Cherubs and drapes are carved into the sides of a children's hearse from the early 1900s.

The child's hearse features a metal lantern — designed to look like a small bed chamber surrounded by drapes — on either side of the driver.

Federal Motor Truck Co. built 160,000 Federals between 1910 and 1959 but less than 200 remain today. This 1920s-era Federal belonged to a drugstore wholesaler and delivered everything from crates of lipstick to pallets of painkillers. The truck did not have turn signals, instead, the driver would pull a string attached to a piece of wood painted to look like a human arm, one on the left, one on the right. The arm would swoop up to indicate the turn direction.

The British-built 1912 Autocar bus which served Indiana and New Jersey cities may be one of the few Autocars still in existence. At the turn of the 20th century, new industries and new technology created jobs that could not be easily categorized as middle or working class like typists and clerks in department stores (another new invention). Autocar was used as a city bus or non-rail trolley car in London, elegant enough for white-collar workers yet cheap enough for hotel maids and restaurant waiters.

Chattanoogans think they are hallucinating when they see Bud Coker driving around in this turn-of-the-20th-century race car. But he really does take guests out for a spin in the restored vehicle.
