We know why some people steal: They hope to “get something for nothing” at somebody else’s expense. That’s criminal and disgusting.
But in a way, vandalism is worse: The damage vandals do does not benefit the criminals, but only costs others.
It was not only criminal but also extremely upsetting that vandals recently heavily damaged property at the Westside Recreation Center.
Fire alarms were disabled, faucets were torn from sinks, water fountains were torn from walls, wires were ripped from air-conditioning units, mirrors were broken, a drink machine was upended, and a ceiling was damaged.
The destruction is appalling. What did the criminal vandals gain from that? They certainly did much damage for which expensive repairs will be needed.
