Holy history

First Presbyterian Church of Athens was founded in 1829 and initially shared the space, then known as the Union Church, with a Baptist congregation. The first church site was dedicated in 1852 but was seized by Union troops, who used it as a stable and burned the pews for firewood. The current, "new" site was completed in 1895. The Shiloh Methodist Church, pictured, in Oneonta, Ala., soon will replace the Oneonta Bible Church on the Hallelujah Trail of historic churches. The Oneonta Bible Church site was purchased by the city of Oneonta and will no longer be used to hold services, rendering it inapplicable for inclusion as part of the trail. (Contributed photo)

The Tabernacle in Hartselle, Ala., is an outdoor worship site that has been actively used by partitioners since the late 1800s. It is made of cedar tree logs. (Contributed photo)

The Temple B'Nai Sholom is the only Jewish worship site included on the Hallelujah Trail tour of historic churches. It was founded in 1899 by German immigrants and features a combination of Romanesque, classical and Renaissance architecture. (Contributed photo)

Church of the Forest is located in the extreme north of Winston County near Mt. Olive. It is named for the natural splendor of its surroundings. (Contributed photo)
