Three Grundy County, Tennessee, residents were jailed in Jackson County, Alabama, on charges of attempted murder after a chase Saturday that included numerous gunshots.
Around 2:15 a.m. CST on Dec. 26, a Bridgeport, Alabama, police officer saw a gray Kia Sorento on Alabama Highway 72 West traveling slowly when the vehicle turned off onto a gravel drive then went back onto the highway headed the wrong way before crossing the median into the eastbound lanes. The vehicle then continued toward Tennessee in the correct direction, according to a statement from Bridgeport police Chief Charles Bunch.
When the officer turned on his emergency lights and attempted to stop the Kia, the vehicle fled, reaching speeds of more than 80 mph and, later, exceeding 100 mph, according to Bunch.
“Upon approaching Highway 277, the Kia ran the red light and headed east,” Bunch’s statement said. “During the pursuit through Bridgeport at rates of speed exceeding 100 mph, the suspects in the vehicle began firing several gunshots at the Bridgeport officer.
“As the chase led back into Stevenson, the suspects began firing several shots at the Stevenson officer,” he said. “With the assistance of [the] Stevenson Police Department, the Kia was disabled.”
No injuries were reported.
Police said they found several handguns in the Kia which they discovered had been reported stolen from Clarksville, Tennessee, Bunch said.
Harley Elizabeth Atterton, 22, of Palmer, Tennessee, was charged with receiving stolen property, two counts of attempted murder and possession of burglar’s tools, police said. Her bond was set at $207,500.
Christian Street, 23, of Monteagle, Tennessee, was charged on a fugitive from justice warrant, two counts of attempted murder, possession of burglar’s tools, assault and receiving stolen property. Street’s bond was set at $207,800, police said.
Terry Dewayne Nunley, 33, of Palmer, Tennessee, was charged with driving under the influence, two counts of reckless endangerment, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, attempting to elude, two counts of attempted murder, possession of burglar’s tools and on a fugitive from justice warrant. Police said Nunley’s bond was set at $210,400.
No court dates were listed.
Nunley also is suspected in a burglary and vandalism investigation in Grundy County at The Caverns entertainment venue in Pelham, Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum said Tuesday.
That incident happened Nov. 22 around 2:15 a.m. CST. Security video shows someone Shrum said has been identified as Nunley entering what appears to be a darkened gift or souvenir shop at the facility. A surveillance camera outside the building recorded another person walking around outside wearing a bandana face mask.
The video shows the man alleged to be Nunley breaking into a cash drawer inside, while the video of the man outside only shows him walking by, Shrum said. The sheriff said Nunley had done some work at The Caverns in the past and likely was familiar with the property.
Shrum said the second suspect is still at-large and anyone with information about his whereabouts should call Grundy County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Hafiz Karteron at 931-692-3466.
