Cornbread Festival rained out

The National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg, Tenn., has been rained out for the day. Organizers at the site announced they will shut the festival down at 2:30 p.m. CDT because of bad weather.

The festival is expected to resume during scheduled hours Sunday.

Though downpours have subsided for the time being, the National Weather Service predicts a band of showers and thunderstorms will move back into the Tennessee Valley later this evening.

Derek Eisentrout, weather service representative for the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn., said tornadoes, golf ball-sized hail and severe winds are expected between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The low pressure system is moving east and has already caused damage in portions of Mississippi and Alabama, he said.

“The strongest part has not worked this far east yet,” he said. “But it should by late this afternoon.”

Some storms are expected to produce rainfall up to 2 inches, with the threat of flooding in some areas, the weather service reported.
