On a typical Saturday at the 6th Cavalry Museum, 6 Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., visitors tour the museum, view “In the Footsteps of Sgt. York” World War I exhibit and learn about the rich military history of the Army Post in Fort Oglethorpe.

Nov. 4 will not be a typical Saturday, it’s Living History Day, says Chris McKeever, executive director of the museum.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., living historians will be on the Barnhardt Circle polo field to tell the story of “their” enlistment, show how they lived in the field and fire weapons. Museum board member Ross Greenwood will have his cavalry mount and pack mule fully outfitted to show how soldiers cared for their mounts, the important role they played and the dangers soldiers and their animals faced in combat.

“In the Footsteps of Sergeant York” exhibit tells the story of Sgt. Alvin York, decorated American World War I soldier, and the events that happened in the Argonne Forest in France in 1918. The exhibit was developed by the Museum of the American Military Experience.

All Living History Day activities are included in regular museum admission of $3 adults, $2 ages 62 and older and students. Children 5 and younger are free.
