The Chattanooga Police Department said in a news release Thursday it has received several complaints about a telephone scam.
The caller claims to be a police officer and tells people they owe $3,400 for failing to appear for jury duty. The caller says that if the debt isn’t resolved, a warrant for their arrest will be issued.
The caller then says the supposed debtors can meet the officer at a nearby grocery store, local business, or on the steps of the courthouse after hours to resolve the debt. The caller also warns against involving other police officers, at the risk of being arrested.
CPD said it does not conduct this type of enforcement, and encourages anyone receiving a call of this type to call 423-698-2525.
