Malik McConnell watched video of Red Bank’s first basketball game of the season – an overtime loss to Central in December – through his spectacles.
He sat on top of a desk in the front row and helped Lions coach Nick Fike dissect the Pounders’ defense, pointing out holes in the zone where he and his teammates could find opportunities for easy baskets in their rematch. Despite all of the preparation, Red Bank lost 64-61 to Central on Tuesday.
But the point guard didn’t need glasses to see the video. He doesn’t wear glasses – or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar goggles or even contacts – when he’s on the court. The glasses are a fashion accessory to his off-the-court appearance, a gift from his girlfriend.
And it’s evident he sees the basket just fine.
McConnell’s performance on the court throughout his prep career – with two different coaches over his four seasons at Red Bank – has propelled him into rare air.
