Another close win

The final play wasn’t designed for Jenaya Wade-Fray to put up a rushed airball that Shanara Hollinquest rebounded underneath the basket. But it worked out anyway.

Hollinquest was fouled on the putback attempt with 0.9 second left and made both free throws to lift the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team to a 68-66 win over Western Carolina on Saturday at McKenzie Arena.

“No, it wasn’t quite how we drew it up,” said Hollinquest, who finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds — her 10th double-double of the season. “Jenaya said she had it all planned out from the start. When she shot it, I tried to get position and hoped it bounced my way. She ‘passed’ it my way.”

It was UTC’s eighth win in a row and yet another tough Southern Conference victory. The Lady Mocs (13-6, 8-2) won by two points for the third time in four games.

“We’re not making anything easy — it’s frustrating,” said UTC coach Wes Moore, who also sent his best wishes to Larry Ward, the Lady Mocs’ longtime radio announcer who suffered several mini-strokes last weekend.
