Carillon concert in Ooltewah is a chance to experience tintinnabulation

The bells of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 7555 Ooltewah-Georgetown Road in Ooltewah, will ring out Sunday morning, July 24, at the hands of a visiting carillonneur from the Netherlands.

The 30-minute concert by Mathieu Polak on the Linnie M. Barger Memorial Carillon is scheduled for 11:15 a.m., following the 10 a.m. service.

An internationally known performer, Polak is on a summer tour in the U.S., with Yale University, Rochester University and the Washington Memorial National Carillon in Valley Forge among a dozen stops.

Parish administrator Marie Sugrue recommends not sitting too close to the church tower to hear the bells.

“The carillon sounds best at some distance away,” she says. Sitting on the lawn at the far end of the building (bring a chair) or on the wall down the hill on Pilgrims’ Way “will allow you to hear the bells without being overwhelmed by the sound.”

Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 423-238-7708 or email sfaec@comcast.net.
