PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. (AP) – Gwinnett County authorities have identified a woman who died after her car plunged into a suburban Atlanta pond.
County medical office investigator Ted Bailey tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution 53-year-old Laura Jones Tavel of Duluth drowned in her car after it sank into a retention pond in Peachtree Corners during rush hour Wednesday morning.
Bailey says it could take up to three months for investigators to determine whether drugs or alcohol factored into the incident.
Gwinnett fire Chief Tommy Rutledge tells WSB-TV Tavel’s car quickly sank and there didn’t appear to be any evidence that she tried escaping the car.
Authorities are unsure of what caused Tavel to veer from the road and into the pond.
