Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a special one-hour, half-mile hiking tour at Chickamauga Battlefield at 2 p.m. today. Participants should meet at the battlefield’s Visitor Center, 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.

This program will explore the role of one of the more famous Confederate units in the Battle of Chickamauga: the 1st Kentucky Brigade, also known as the Orphan Brigade.

The Orphan Brigade gained fame on many battlefields of the Western Theater during the Civil War. With men hailing from across the Bluegrass State, Kentucky soldiers served on both sides.

The Orphan Brigade’s story is, therefore, an interesting and tragic tale, especially the chapter that unfolded on the battlefield at Chickamauga.

Wear comfortable shoes for a short walk, bring a bottle of water and dress appropriately for the weather.
