Ringgold Tigers

photo Minus the team’s top two running backs and three leading receivers from a year ago, quarterback Devin Lancaster will have a bigger role in the Ringgold offense this season.

Pedal to the metal

Robert Akins admits he was spoiled the past three years. Whenever the Ringgold football coach needed a tough yard (or 5 or 10), he could turn to the dynamic duo of D.L. Goins and Kile Sholl.

The Tigers soon will find out what life is like without the two athletes who combined for 2,400 yards and 24 touchdowns a year ago and had more than 5,000 total yards the past two seasons. As training camp opened, the coaches were sorting among six candidates for the lead back role, but Akins was impressed with the group.

“We feel like we could be pretty solid by the time we play that first game,” Akins said. “Kile and D.L. were great players, and it’s going to be strange not having them back there.”

Among the candidates is Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe transfer Dee King, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound junior who has been clocked at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Sophomore Ty Jones and senior Dakota McIntire also are in the mix.
